We went to a baseball game on Sunday past, VIP. In the stadium there’s a section that’s marked off with a fence that you have to show your ticket, get a bracelet, etc. to enter…
I couldn’t see the game at all the whole night, but it was a fun experience. Everybody standing on their chairs, every 20 minutes we got splashed with water as people in the stands threw their water in defiance of some play, the music was loud, the cheerleaders did not smile, and it was an experience.
At concerts, games, at night outside of restaurants etc. there are often children trying to sell gum (chiclets) or with long leaves trying to make you a beautiful creation (usually a flower) to give as a gift in exchange for cordobas. As I was sitting in my chair not watching the came, a little girl came up to me and asked me to buy some gum. Her hair was ratty and looked like it hadn’t been combed in a while, she was dirty, and she was cute. I told her no, I didn’t want any. And she sat down beside me.
This is how the conversation went, but in English…
Little Girl: “Why won’t you buy gum? It’s good.”
Shannon: “No thanks. I don’t want any. How is your work, busy?”
LG: “Yes, it’s a busy night. I’ve already sold almost half of my gum, but it’s hard. Maybe your friends will buy some?”
S: “No, I think they already have some.”
LG: “Oh. Do you have a boyfriend?”
S: “No.”
LG: “Why not?”
S: “I don’t know. Do you?”
LG: “No.”
S: “Why not?”
LG: Laughs and looks at my hotdog. “Do you even like baseball?”
S: “Not really, but I came with my friends.”
LG: “Oh.”
S: “Do you want some of my hot dog?”
LG: “Yes.”
I broke some off and gave it to her. She seemed hungry. After eating it, it was back to business…
LG: “Thanks. I need to go work now. Bye!”
A little later in the night a boy came up to me and was trying to convince me to buy one of his
decorative flowers that he was making.
Little Boy: “Here, buy one. It’s for you. A pretty flower for a pretty lady.”
Shannon: “No, thank you.”
LB: “Why? It’s pretty!”
S: “Is it difficult?”
LB: “No, it’s very easy!”
S: “I don’t believe you. It looks hard to make those! They’re very beautiful…”
LB: “It’s easy!”
S: “Can you teach me?”
LB: “Oh yes, watch!” The little boy took two strips of palm leaves. He started to make the flower, and then showed me how to begin making it. He then gave it to me and started his own.
S: “This is hard!”
LB: Laughing, “No! It’s easy. Just keep doing that!”
S: “What do I do now, now that I’m finished?”
LB: “Do this…” He begins to tie a knot.
S: “Wow! That’s pretty! Thanks for teaching me! Can I take a picture so I can show my friends?”
LB: “Yes, of course!”
After taking a few pics (see below), I gave him 5 C and he smiled. Off to his next client.
It was fun. I love interacting with people and just talking and hearing their stories…
Thanks for reading
Shannon
