day of love and friendship 02.14.2008

Filed under: birthday, friends, holiday, nicaragua, photos — sbrisco @ 4:10 pm

so in Nicaragua they do not only celebrate love on Valentine’s Day, they also celebrate friendship. what a wonderful concept, because we all have friends (although we might not all have a special someone *sniff sniff* hahaha) anywhooo with red balloons in the coffee shops and cut-out hearts on the windows of the stores, today is recognized for all types of relationships - platonic and romantic.

asides from the repeated statement that nicaraguan men have hearts so big that they have room enough to love 3 women each… and that the ratio is somewhere like 3:1 for women to men… there are some beautiful people here and i’ve made some wonderful friends. took me a little while to adjust to some of the cultural differences, and i’m probably STILL adjusting. some friends i’ve made just recently, having met in Matagalpa last weekend… or at work today. jajaja… it’s nice to meet new people :P

another friend i’ve made while being here is Kiki, my housemate. and today just happens to also be her birthday!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY Kiki. She told me that she has red hair because she was born on Valentine’s Day, and the good news is that if you don’t have a Valentine you can love her for Valentine’s Day :P

and since my other housemates birthday is tomorrow, we had a little party at our house to celebrate both of them. i will upload pics tomorrow :)

happy valentine’s day :P

fourth of july 07.5.2007

happy independence day!!

so this is my first fourth of july, independence day celebration. it was hot today. i spent it chillin in my room, organizing my music, did a little reading for class, and hanging out with Melissa. it was very laid back. i always heard when i was in Canada that it was a huge celebration, but maybe school just got to everybody. it was nice to relax and be quiet though - a day off!

we all went to rebecca’s and her mom and dad had dinner for a large group of us (thanks rebecca!!). we played round robin - i was going to put up a video but YouTube is being tempermental right now so that will have to wait. it’s funny…

we then set out (by we, i mean: mindy, matt, faith and i) to go to philly to see the fireworks. it had been raining but they had said on tv that they would still do fireworks and they did the rest of the show… so we drove downtown. took about 45 mins in the POURING rain to find a spot. by then we started walking towards downtown and the rain had pretty much stopped. as we got close we were told the fireworks were cancelled.

we saw them from the highway driving home. never believe the first person that tells you something hehe — they got delayed.

anyways it was fun.

today was, well not quite the most exciting Canada Day I’ve had. i didn’t wear red and white… didn’t go to a BBQ. didn’t watch any fireworks. none of the above.

i did sit inside and finish writing a paper (oops). it’s done though, woo hoo!

i miss you all, my friends back home, and family - the people i’d normally have spent today with. but i’ll have my first “Independence Day” celebration on July 4th with my friends here. *exciting*

… our home and native land.
